I hadn't made plans to celebrate Dr. Du Bois's 140th birthday, but the students at Masterman High School didn't want the important event to pass unnoticed. We celebrated with presentations to two African-American history classes about The Philadelphia Negro and Mapping Du Bois project followed by a pizza party. You might think that eating lunch at 10:15 would slow people down, but 12 pizzas and a full sheet-cake were gone within 30 mnutes. We talked about going school-wide with the celebration next year. The students started reading parts of The Philadelphia Negro the week after the party.
